Bratwurst is a type of sausage, popular mainly in Germany, from where the name (Bratwurst in German) originates. Bratwursts were originally made from the leftovers of various meats produced by farmers in the old days. The way in which they are prepared varies from place to place, and they are usually served with bread and mustard, and are a popular choice at fast food stalls in Germany in particular. In Slovenia, roasts were one of the key dishes filling the plates during kolin. However, since Slovenians have always loved simple food, roasts are regularly on the lunch list and are combined with potatoes, cabbage and white bread.
Sausages with cabbage are one of the more popular dishes when temperatures outside drop below zero. Roast cabbage sausages are an easy and quick dish that can be made by a novice in the kitchen. Typically, roasts are roasted with sauerkraut or fresh cabbage, but the decision is based on the cook's preference. The dish is served in one of two ways - either in a toasted bread roll or simply on a plate with a side of potato salad.
